Getting there

How to Get to Berlin Zoologischer Garten

From BER Airport

  • S-Bahn: The S9 runs directly from the airport to Zoologischer Garten every 20 minutes. Alternatively, take the FEX to Hauptbahnhof and the S-Bahn from there.
  • Tickets: The airport is in fare zone C, so you need an ABC ticket.

From the City Centre

  • S-Bahn: The Stadtbahn lines S3, S5, S7 and S9 connect Zoo with Hauptbahnhof, Friedrichstraße and Alexanderplatz.
  • U-Bahn: The U2 and U9 stop underneath the station.
  • Bus: Buses 100 and 200 run from Zoologischer Garten to Alexanderplatz past many of Berlin's sights.

Platforms and station layout

Zoologischer Garten is a through station on the Stadtbahn viaduct, under a long glass and steel hall. The S-Bahn and regional trains use the platforms up on the viaduct; the station hall with shops and ticket machines is at street level underneath.

The U2 and U9 platforms are underground and are signposted from the hall. Bus stops for the 100, 200 and other lines are on the square in front of the station, on Hardenbergplatz.

The station is compact compared with Hauptbahnhof, and changes between trains, U-Bahn and buses rarely take more than a few minutes.

Practical tips

Tips for First-Time Visitors

Before You Arrive

  • Download the BVG or DB Navigator app: Both show live departures and sell tickets.
  • Tickets: Berlin is split into fare zones A, B and C. Zones A and B cover the whole city; zone C covers the surroundings, including BER Airport. The Deutschlandticket is valid on all S-Bahn, U-Bahn, tram, bus and regional trains, but not on ICE or IC trains.
  • Validate paper tickets: Single tickets bought from a BVG machine usually have to be stamped in the small validators at the platform entrance before you travel. Tickets bought in the BVG or DB Navigator app are valid straight away.

At the Station

  • Sightseeing by bus: The double-decker buses 100 and 200 start here and pass many landmarks on the way to Alexanderplatz. A normal AB ticket is enough.
  • Long-distance trains: For ICE and IC trains, go to Hauptbahnhof or Spandau; the S-Bahn gets you to either in a few minutes.

Common Mistakes

  • Construction until 12 December 2026: no regional trains stop at Zoologischer Garten (tracks 1–4 are closed). The S-Bahn and U-Bahn run as usual.
  • Old guidebooks: Older guides describe Zoo as Berlin's main station. That changed in 2006; today long-distance trains leave from Hauptbahnhof.

About this station

Through station in Charlottenburg, in the heart of the City West, opened in 1882 on the Stadtbahn. Known locally as Bahnhof Zoo, it was West Berlin's main long-distance station during the Cold War.
