Practical tips

Tips for First-Time Visitors

Before You Arrive

  • Download DB Navigator: It shows live platforms and delays and sells long-distance and local tickets.
  • Tickets: Berlin is split into fare zones A, B and C. Zones A and B cover the whole city; zone C covers the surroundings, including BER Airport. The Deutschlandticket is valid on all S-Bahn, U-Bahn, tram, bus and regional trains, but not on ICE or IC trains.
  • Validate paper tickets: Single tickets bought from a BVG machine usually have to be stamped in the small validators at the platform entrance before you travel. Tickets bought in the BVG or DB Navigator app are valid straight away.

At the Station

  • Time before your train: The old town and the Spandau Arcaden are a few minutes' walk from the entrance if you need food or supplies.
  • Carriage position: ICE trains are long; check the carriage position display (Wagenreihung) on the platform before the train arrives.

Common Mistakes

  • Construction until 12 December 2026: trains to and from Hamburg do not stop at Spandau. Use Hauptbahnhof for these trains.
  • Platform changes: Long-distance platforms can change at short notice. Check the departure boards or DB Navigator again shortly before your train.
  • Not every train stops: Most long-distance trains to the west stop at Spandau, but not all. Check that Spandau is listed for your train.
