From the City Centre

  • S-Bahn: The Stadtbahn lines S3, S5, S7 and S9 connect Ostbahnhof with Alexanderplatz, Friedrichstraße, Hauptbahnhof and Zoologischer Garten in a few minutes.

Platforms and station layout

Ostbahnhof is a through station raised above street level on the Stadtbahn, the east–west railway viaduct that crosses central Berlin.

The station hall is at street level, with shops, food outlets and ticket machines. From there, stairs, escalators and lifts lead up to the platforms. S-Bahn trains and long-distance trains use different platforms, so check the departure boards in the hall for your platform number before you go up.

Because many long-distance trains start here, they are often already waiting at the platform well before departure.

Practical tips

Tips for First-Time Visitors

Before You Arrive

  • Download DB Navigator: It shows live platforms and delays and sells long-distance and local tickets.
  • Tickets: Berlin is split into fare zones A, B and C. Zones A and B cover the whole city; zone C covers the surroundings, including BER Airport. The Deutschlandticket is valid on all S-Bahn, U-Bahn, tram, bus and regional trains, but not on ICE or IC trains.
  • Validate paper tickets: Single tickets bought from a BVG machine usually have to be stamped in the small validators at the platform entrance before you travel. Tickets bought in the BVG or DB Navigator app are valid straight away.

At the Station

  • Board early: When your ICE or IC starts at Ostbahnhof, you can often board before the crowds that get on at Hauptbahnhof and Spandau.
  • Combine with sightseeing: If you have time before your train, the East Side Gallery is a short walk away.

Common Mistakes

  • Construction until 12 December 2026: no long-distance trains stop here. Use Südkreuz, Gesundbrunnen, Ostkreuz, Lichtenberg or Charlottenburg instead, as shown in your booking.
  • Platform changes: Long-distance platforms can change at short notice. Check the departure boards or DB Navigator again shortly before your train.
  • Ostbahnhof is not Ostkreuz: They are different stations, two S-Bahn stops apart, with Warschauer Straße in between. Check which one your ticket or booking names.

About this station

Through station in Friedrichshain, on the eastern side of Berlin's city centre. It opened in 1842 and has changed its name several times; in the GDR era it was East Berlin's main station, and it has been called Ostbahnhof since 1998.

Many long-distance trains that cross Berlin from west to east start or end their journey here, so Ostbahnhof is often a quieter place than Hauptbahnhof to board an ICE or IC. The S-Bahn lines of the Stadtbahn also stop here.

The station is a short walk from the River Spree and the East Side Gallery, the longest surviving stretch of the Berlin Wall, and from the Uber Arena concert and sports venue.

Construction until 12 December 2026: the Stadtbahn between Charlottenburg and Ostbahnhof is closed to long-distance and regional trains. Long-distance trains do not call at Ostbahnhof during this time; the RE1 towards Frankfurt (Oder) and the RE7 towards Königs Wusterhausen start here, and the S-Bahn runs as usual.
