Orpington station is a straightforward, accessible hub serving south-east London, but its layout can be slightly deceptive for first-timers. Despite the station’s modest size, it features eight platforms rather than the four originally anticipated, arranged in a mix of through and bay configurations. Think of the station as having two primary functional sides separated by the tracks: the main entrance side (Platforms 1 and 2) and the bus interchange side (Platforms 5 through 8).
Platforms 2, 3, 4, and 5 are through platforms used by main-line services. Platform 2 typically hosts fast trains toward London Charing Cross or Cannon Street, while the island platform (3 and 4) handles trains toward Ashford International, Tunbridge Wells, or stopping services to central London. Platform 5 is generally used for slower stopping services toward Sevenoaks. Platforms 1, 6, 7, and 8 are bay platforms—meaning they are "dead-ends" that do not continue through the station—and are primarily used for terminating services that begin or end their journeys here.
The most common point of confusion for new visitors is the platform numbering and the different access routes. Because the station grew over time, the bay platforms (6–8) are physically separated from the main entrance area. If you arrive by bus, you will likely enter near the Platform 5–8 side, whereas the main station building and ticket office are located on the Crofton Road side near Platform 1 and 2.
Navigation is simplified by the modern footbridge, which is the best way to move between platforms. Since the station is fully accessible, you should use the lifts provided on this bridge to move between platforms, especially if you have luggage. Avoid the older underground subway, as it is not suitable for wheelchair users or those with heavy bags. Given the station's compact footprint, transferring between the furthest platforms—such as from Platform 1 to Platform 8—will take only about 3 to 5 minutes at a brisk walking pace. Simply follow the overhead signage for your destination line, and ensure you check the departure screens, as bay platform usage can shift depending on the time of day and service disruptions.
