Welcome to London Waterloo, one of the UK’s busiest railway hubs. As a large terminus station, it can initially feel overwhelming, but its layout is logically structured once you know the secret: it is essentially a massive, single-level concourse with platforms radiating outwards like the fingers of a hand.
Platform Organization
The station features 24 platforms, all located on one main level. Think of the station as a long, horizontal arc. When standing at the main entrance looking towards the tracks, the platforms are numbered 1 to 24 from left to right (west to east). Because this is a terminus station, all tracks end here; you never have to worry about "through" platforms. However, because the station is quite expansive, it is a large facility—allow yourself at least 10–15 minutes if you need to travel from the far west end (platforms 1–6) to the far east end (platforms 20–24).
Mapping Routes to Platforms
While platform assignments can change, they generally follow a functional grouping:
- Platforms 1–6: Typically serve suburban routes heading toward Wimbledon, Guildford, and Woking.
- Platforms 7–16: Primarily handle long-distance South Western Railway services to destinations like Basingstoke, Portsmouth, Weymouth, and Exeter.
- Platforms 17–24: Generally used for the Waterloo–Reading line and some additional suburban services.
Navigation Tips for First-Timers
The most common point of confusion is the sheer size of the concourse and the distance between platforms. If you are arriving with heavy luggage, do not underestimate the walk; look for the large digital departure boards centrally located to confirm your platform number immediately.
For onward travel, the London Underground (the "Tube") is located beneath the main station. Do not look for Tube platforms on the main concourse level; instead, follow the prominent signs for the "Underground" or "Subway," which will lead you via escalators or stairs down to the lower levels. There are elevators available for step-free access if you are carrying bags, typically found near the main exits and central concourse areas. If you feel lost, the station is well-staffed; look for the high-visibility vests of the station team, who are accustomed to helping first-time visitors find their way.
