Welcome to Wels Hauptbahnhof. While the station acts as a major junction for Upper Austria, connecting the Western Railway (Westbahn) with regional lines like the Almtalbahn, its layout is compact and straightforward. Unlike sprawling metropolitan hubs, Wels features a manageable configuration with 11 platform tracks in total. Think of the station as a single, efficient row of tracks rather than a complex multi-level maze.
The station provides seven through-tracks (numbered 1 through 6 and 8) which handle the majority of long-distance Railjet, InterCity, and ICE trains, as well as high-frequency regional services. In addition to these, there are four bay platforms (numbered 7a, 7b, 11, and 12). These bay platforms are primarily used for terminating or originating regional trains, which helps keep the main through-tracks clear for express traffic.
Navigating the station is intuitive because all platforms are accessed via a central pedestrian bridge that spans the tracks, connecting the main station building to the Neustadt district. You do not need to worry about multiple levels for platforms; once you reach the pedestrian bridge, you are essentially at the correct height to descend to your platform. Each platform, with the exception of 1, 11, and 12, is equipped with an elevator, stairs, and escalators, making it fully accessible for travelers with luggage.
If you are arriving for the first time, the biggest potential point of confusion is the numbering of the bay platforms (7a, 7b, 11, and 12). If your train is scheduled for one of these, simply follow the signs on the pedestrian bridge toward the higher numbers. Because the station is quite compact, you can easily walk between the most distant platforms in under 5 minutes, even with luggage.
When you enter the station building, you will find essential services on the ground floor, including ticketing and shops. For further assistance, the ÖBB travel centre is located on the first floor. Simply look at the overhead departure boards to confirm your platform, head to the pedestrian bridge, and descend directly to your train. It is a very visitor-friendly station designed for quick and easy transitions.
