Gare Montparnasse is a bustling terminus station, which means all tracks end here rather than passing through. Think of it as a giant, modern "dead-end" wall of trains; you arrive at the concourse, and the platforms are lined up directly in front of you. Because this is a large station with 28 platforms, you should allow at least 10–15 minutes to navigate between the main concourse and your departure point, especially if you are carrying luggage or traveling during peak hours.
The station’s primary level for boarding is Level 2. Here, platforms 1 through 24 are arranged in a single, long row from left to right. Most high-speed TGV Atlantique trains—serving Brittany, Bordeaux, and the southwest of France—depart from these platforms. You will find that platforms 1–9 and 18–24 are typically reserved for these TGV services, while platforms 10–17 generally handle regional and suburban trains.
A common point of confusion for first-timers is the location of platforms 25–28. These are not part of the main row; they are situated in a separate extension often referred to as "Vaugirard." If your ticket indicates a platform number above 24, do not panic, but do be aware that it requires a few extra minutes of walking to reach this distinct area. Follow the overhead signs closely, as they are your best guide in this busy environment.
Navigation is facilitated by a massive digital departure board located in the main concourse. Do not head toward your platform until your specific train number and platform assignment appear on this screen, which usually happens 10–20 minutes before departure. Note that many TGV platforms now feature ticket gates; you must scan your ticket’s barcode to enter, and these gates often close two minutes before the train leaves.
To reach Level 2 from the street-level entrance (Level 0), use the large escalators inside the glass facade. If you are arriving by Metro, you will emerge at Level -1 and will need to follow the "Grandes Lignes" signs through the corridors—including a moving walkway—before taking the escalators up to the main concourse. Always keep your ticket handy, as you will need it for both the Metro gates and the platform access gates.
