Navigating Poznań Główny for the first time can be disorienting because the station complex blends modern architecture with older infrastructure. While the station is a major Western Poland hub, it is not a simple single-level layout. Instead, it is a sprawling, integrated transport complex connected to the Avenida shopping center. The station features 11 platforms, which include both through-tracks and dead-end (terminal) tracks.
Think of the station as a multi-layered sandwich: the platforms sit at ground level, while the main passenger hall, ticket offices, and the shopping center are located on the levels above. Because of this vertical separation, you must navigate between levels to reach your train. If you are arriving from the city center, you will likely enter through the modern main building or the shopping center. If you are using regional rail, you might find yourself closer to the Dworzec Zachodni (Western Station) entrance, which provides direct access to the western end of the platforms.
The primary source of confusion for first-timers is the physical distance between platforms and the transition between the modern terminal and the older platform areas. Platform numbering runs from east to west, but because of the station's history, the layout is not a perfectly straight line. You should allow at least 15–20 minutes to navigate from the main entrance to your platform, especially if you are carrying luggage or traveling with family.
To reach your platform, look for the central corridors or the walkways leading through the shopping center. While escalators and elevators are available, they can become crowded. If you find the signage in the upper levels difficult to follow, the most reliable strategy is to head down to the underground passenger tunnels. These tunnels run beneath the tracks and provide a clear, direct route to every platform. Once you reach the tunnel level, you will find consistent signage directing you to the specific platform number for your departure. Always check the large digital boards in the main hall immediately upon arrival to confirm your platform, as last-minute changes can occur in this busy transit hub.
