Navigating Stratford station for the first time can be daunting, but thinking of it as two distinct, connected zones—High Level and Low Level—will help you build a reliable mental map. This is a large, complex interchange, so I recommend allowing at least 10–15 minutes if you have luggage or need to navigate between the most distant platforms.
The High Level platforms (1–12) serve a mix of National Rail, London Overground, and Central Line services. These platforms run generally east-west and are accessed via subways from the main concourse. You will find platforms 1 and 2 used for London Overground, while platforms 3, 3A, and 6 serve the Central Line. Platforms 5 and 8 are key for Elizabeth Line stopping services. Platforms 9–12 generally handle Greater Anglia and other regional rail routes.
The Low Level platforms (13–17) are physically separate and typically accessed via a mezzanine bridge or specific subway routes from the main station building. Platforms 13–15 are dedicated to the Jubilee Line. Platforms 16 and 17 are used by the DLR.
A common point of confusion for first-timers is the distinction between "Stratford" (the large, multi-platform hub described above) and the separate "Stratford International" station nearby. If your ticket specifies "Stratford International," do not go to the main Stratford station; it is a different facility served by high-speed HS1 domestic trains (Southeastern Javelin services). If you are at the main Stratford station and need to reach the Jubilee Line, follow signs for the mezzanine bridge rather than the subways used for the High Level platforms.
The station is fully accessible, with lifts and escalators serving all platform areas. If you feel lost, look for the help points located on the main concourse and near the gate lines, or seek out station staff who are readily available. Always check the digital departure boards on the concourse before heading to your platform, as platform allocations can occasionally shift due to operational requirements. By identifying whether your train is High Level or Low Level first, you will find navigation much more straightforward.
