Platform Guide & Layout: San Sebastián/Donostia Station
Welcome to San Sebastián! As a first-time visitor, the most important thing to know is that this city has two distinct railway stations. This guide covers the San Sebastián/Donostia (Estación del Norte) station, which serves long-distance, high-speed, and regional Renfe trains. Do not confuse this with the Amara station, which is a separate facility used exclusively for local Euskotren services to Bilbao and Hendaye.
Station Layout
The San Sebastián/Donostia station is a straightforward, compact terminal. Following recent modernization and expansion, the station features six tracks served by five platforms. Think of the layout as a single, efficient row. Because the station is quite small compared to major European hubs, you will not need to navigate complex multi-level platform mazes. Everything is conveniently located at ground level, making the transition from the main hall to your train very simple.
Navigation and Connectivity
To access the platforms, you will pass through the main station building. If you are arriving for a long-distance Alvia train to Madrid or Barcelona, please arrive at least 20–30 minutes before your scheduled departure. This is because mandatory luggage screening is conducted before you reach the platform area.
Once inside, you will find ticket machines, information boards, and waiting areas. Clear signage will direct you to your specific platform. While the station is compact, it is fully accessible; if you have heavy luggage or mobility needs, you will find elevators and ramps available to navigate between the main hall and the platform areas. Should you need to transfer to the Amara station for an Euskotren service, it is a pleasant, flat 10-minute walk away by crossing the Maria Cristina Bridge.
First-Timer Tips
The most common point of confusion for visitors is simply ending up at the wrong station. Always double-check your ticket to confirm whether your train departs from "Donostia/San Sebastián" (Renfe) or "Amara" (Euskotren). If you have extra time before your departure, skip the station vending machines and head to the Tabakalera cultural centre directly across the street, which offers excellent dining options. Keep your ticket handy until you have fully exited your destination station, as you may encounter turnstiles on both ends of your journey. Enjoy your trip through the beautiful Basque Country!
