Welcome to Mainz Hauptbahnhof. As a first-time visitor, it helps to think of this station as a straightforward, compact through-station rather than a sprawling mega-hub. While official records may list nine primary platform tracks (1–6, 8, 11, and 13), the layout is manageable and logical.
The station operates on a primary ground level (Ebene 0) where you will find the main entrance, ticket counters, and retail shops. All platform tracks are accessed via a central pedestrian underpass or an upper-level bridge structure. Because it is a through-station, trains do not terminate here but continue along the Rhine junction routes; this means you should always check the electronic departure boards to confirm your specific track, as regional and long-distance trains (ICE/IC) share the available platform infrastructure depending on scheduling.
Most platforms are numbered sequentially. A common point of confusion for first-timers is the numbering gap—you will notice there is no Platform 7, 9, 10, or 12. Do not spend time looking for these; they simply do not exist in the current configuration. Additionally, while Platform 1 is easily accessible from the main station building at ground level, platforms 2 through 13 require you to navigate via the central underpass or the main bridge.
If you are arriving with luggage, the station is fully equipped with elevators and escalators that connect the main concourse to the platform level. Because the station is relatively compact, you can comfortably navigate between the furthest platforms in about 5 to 7 minutes, even at a leisurely pace. The "Rhine junction" routes, including key regional connections and high-speed trains to Frankfurt Airport, are well-signposted throughout the central hall.
To ensure a smooth experience, locate the large yellow "Abfahrt" (Departure) boards in the main hall immediately upon arrival. These displays will confirm your platform number and provide real-time updates on any potential track changes. If you have a tight connection, remember that the station is laid out linearly; if you know your platform number, follow the clear signage toward the underpass, and you will find your train within a short walk. Enjoy your journey through the Rhine valley!
