Platform Guide & Layout: Hamar Station
Hamar Station offers a straightforward, compact layout that is easy to navigate, even for first-time visitors. Unlike large metropolitan transit hubs, Hamar features a simple arrangement consisting of just three tracks served by two primary platform areas. Think of the station as a single-level, linear layout where all movement occurs on the ground floor, making it very difficult to get lost.
The station utilizes one side platform and one island platform. Track 1 is served by the side platform, which is typically used for southbound trains heading toward Oslo. Tracks 2 and 3 share the island platform, which is accessible via an underpass from the main station building. Because there are only three tracks in total, you will not encounter the complex level changes or confusing wing designations found in larger European hubs. All platforms are clearly marked and visible within a short walking distance from the station building.
As a vital Innlandet hub, Hamar serves as the connection point for the Dovre Line (running between Oslo and Trondheim) and the Røros Line. Because the station is quite small, you do not need to worry about long transit times between platforms. Even with heavy luggage, you can comfortably navigate from the station entrance to any of the three tracks in under 3–5 minutes.
For first-time visitors, the most important tip is to check the departure screens in the main waiting area or on the platform immediately upon arrival. While the layout is simple, regional and express trains share these three tracks, so always confirm your specific platform number on the digital display. If you require accessibility assistance, elevators are available to provide step-free access to the island platform (Tracks 2 and 3).
If you are transferring between trains, the station’s small scale means you will likely not need more than 5 minutes to switch platforms. There is no need for complex mental mapping; once you pass through the station building, the platform layout will be immediately intuitive. Just follow the signs toward your specific track number, and you will find your train waiting in the open air.
