Platform Guide & Layout
Gare de l'Est is a classic "terminus" station, meaning all tracks end here at a massive, shared concourse known as the Quai Transversal. Unlike some sprawling modern hubs, it is impressively straightforward to navigate. The station features 29 platforms (numbered 2 through 30) arranged in a single, neat row along this concourse. Think of the station as a long, horizontal line where you walk past all the platform entrances in one go.
The platforms are divided into three distinct zones based on their destination and train type, which helps you orient yourself quickly. Platforms 2–12, located on the west side, are designated as the "yellow" zone and primarily serve high-speed TGV Est and international ICE trains heading toward Germany (including Frankfurt, Munich, and Stuttgart) and eastern France. The central platforms, 13–22, are largely dedicated to suburban Transilien and regional TER trains. Finally, platforms 23–30 on the eastern side are the "blue" zone, which also handles a mix of mainline and international services.
Because this is a large station, you should allow at least 10–15 minutes to move between extreme ends—for example, if you arrive at platform 2 but discover your train is departing from platform 30. Fortunately, the entire station is at a single ground level, offering step-free access from the street and the main hall directly to your train. This makes navigating with luggage significantly easier than in multi-level stations.
A common point of confusion for first-time visitors is that platform numbers are not always posted until 15–20 minutes before departure. Keep a close eye on the large digital departure boards in the main hall. While you wait, the screens will often indicate whether to head toward the "yellow" or "blue" platform zones, allowing you to position yourself in the correct area before the specific track number is announced. There are ticket gates at the entrance to each platform group; have your ticket or digital barcode ready for scanning. If you need assistance or have questions, information desks are conveniently located in the main hall, specifically between platforms 15 and 18, and another opposite platforms 7 and 8.
