Welcome to Cardiff Central, the primary gateway to the Welsh capital. As a first-time visitor, it helps to think of this station as a straightforward, single-level platform arrangement built above a ground-level concourse. Despite being the busiest station in Wales, its layout is quite intuitive once you understand that all tracks are elevated above the main entrance areas.
The station features nine platforms in total, numbered 0 through 4, 6, 7, and 8. You will find them arranged in a single row. Because it is a through station rather than a terminal, trains do not stop at a dead end; they continue along the South Wales Main Line.
For navigation, remember that the tracks are accessed from the ground-level concourse via subways, stairs, and lifts. If you are arriving at the main northern entrance on Central Square, you can reach most platforms easily. Platform 0 is a notable exception; it is located at the north side of the station and is accessed directly from the main concourse near the retail units. Platforms 1 through 8 are reached via the eastern and western subways that run beneath the tracks.
When planning your movement, note that Platforms 3 and 4 are divided into "A" and "B" sections to accommodate multiple local trains on the same track. This is a common point of confusion for new travelers, so always check the digital information screens on the concourse to confirm which specific section your train departs from. Platforms 6, 7, and 8, located toward the south side of the station, are primarily dedicated to local Valley Lines services connecting to Cardiff Queen Street and the surrounding regions.
Since this is a compact station with only nine platforms, you do not need to worry about vast distances. Even moving between the furthest platforms—such as from Platform 0 to Platform 8—is a manageable walk of roughly 5 to 7 minutes, even with luggage. The station is fully accessible, with lifts available to reach every platform from the subways. Just keep your ticket handy, as you will need it to pass through the automatic gates at the concourse entrances to reach the platforms.
