Welcome to Athens Central Railway Station, commonly known as Larissa Station. As a first-time visitor, the most important thing to know is that while the station is currently undergoing significant redevelopment, its layout remains relatively straightforward. Think of it as a single-level, linear hub where all train departures and arrivals are concentrated in one central area.
Unlike massive European transit terminals with complex, multi-level platform systems, Larissa Station is compact. It currently operates with a limited number of active platforms—typically three main platforms in use—all situated on the ground level. These serve as the main artery for all national InterCity trains traveling to Thessaloniki and beyond, as well as the Proastiakos suburban rail lines connecting you to Athens International Airport, Piraeus, and other regional destinations.
Because the station is currently in a transition phase, you will not find complicated "wings" or split-level boarding areas. Everything is accessed via a central concourse. If you are arriving by Metro, you will emerge from the underground Red Line (Line 2) directly into the station area. The Metro exit is well-signposted, but please be aware that the transition from the underground Metro platform to the surface-level railway platforms requires navigating stairs or elevators. If you are traveling with heavy luggage, prioritize the elevators, as the station’s ongoing construction can occasionally make the standard pedestrian pathways feel slightly narrow or congested.
The primary point of confusion for many first-timers is the name. While officially called "Athens Railway Station," locals and signage almost exclusively refer to it as "Larissa Station." Do not be alarmed if your ticket says "Athens" but the signs around you say "Larissa"—they are the exact same place.
Since the layout is compact, you won't need to worry about long walks between distant platforms. Even with luggage, moving from the station entrance to your departure platform should take no more than 3 to 5 minutes. Simply check the digital departure boards in the main hall upon arrival to confirm your specific platform number, as these can shift during the ongoing construction. Keep an eye on these screens, and you will find navigating the station to be a simple, manageable experience.
