Platform Guide & Layout
Rennes Station (Gare de Rennes) is a straightforward, modern through-station serving as the primary gateway to Brittany. Despite its status as a major regional hub, the layout is relatively compact and easy to navigate. The station features 12 platforms serving a mix of high-speed TGV trains to Paris and regional TER services to destinations like Saint-Malo, Brest, and Nantes.
Think of the station as a two-level complex. The main concourse is located on the upper level, where you will find the departure screens, shops, and station services. The platforms are located directly below this main hall. Because it is a through-station, trains do not terminate here but pass through on their way to other destinations.
Access to the platforms from the main concourse is simple: you will typically descend via escalators, stairs, or elevators to reach the track level. If you are arriving on one train and connecting to another, you will generally go down to the platform level, walk through the central access area, and head back up to your next platform. Because the station is well-integrated, you do not need to worry about complex wings or remote terminals. A connection time of 10–15 minutes is usually sufficient, even with luggage, provided you move directly between the main concourse and your assigned platform.
The most common confusion for first-time visitors is waiting for platform announcements, which often appear on the departure boards only 10–20 minutes before the train arrives. Do not be alarmed if your platform is not listed immediately upon your arrival. Keep an eye on the large digital boards in the main hall. Once your platform number is displayed, follow the clear overhead signage toward the designated track.
For those arriving or departing the station, the North exit leads directly toward the historic city center, while the South exit offers alternative access. Both exits are connected to the main concourse and are well-signposted. If you have any mobility concerns, the station is fully equipped with elevators serving all levels, and the Accès Plus service is available for those who require additional assistance. Simply check the real-time departure boards, stay in the central area until your platform is confirmed, and you will find your train with ease.
