Welcome to Hannover Hauptbahnhof. As a first-time visitor, you will find this station’s layout remarkably straightforward once you understand its "tracks above the city" design. The station functions as a through station, meaning trains pass straight through rather than terminating here. You will find 12 platform tracks arranged across 6 island platforms, all located on the upper level, while the main concourse, shopping arcade, and city exits are situated on the level beneath the tracks.
Think of the station as a single, elevated row of platforms sitting above a large, bustling shopping hall. Because it is a through station, there are no "dead-end" tracks to worry about; trains simply arrive from one side and depart from the other. The platforms are numbered 1 through 14, though please note there are only 12 active platform tracks (1-14, with tracks 5 and 6 serving as through lines without platforms). You will find ICE long-distance trains, regional trains, and S-Bahn services sharing this same upper level. Because all platforms are on the same level, there is no need to navigate between different floors to find your train; you only need to move between the concourse and the platform level.
To reach your train, look for the central tunnel or the side access points in the main hall. Each platform is equipped with escalators and elevators, making the station fully accessible even if you are traveling with heavy luggage. If you are transferring between platforms, allow yourself 5–10 minutes. While the station is compact, it can become quite busy during peak hours, and walking from one end of a platform to the other to reach a specific carriage can take a few minutes.
A common point of confusion for newcomers is the transition between the concourse and the platforms. Always verify your platform number on the large digital departure boards in the main hall before heading up. Once you are on the platform, clear signage will guide you to your specific carriage sector. If you have any trouble, the main meeting point—a local landmark known as "under the tail"—is located by the equestrian statue at the main entrance on Ernst-August-Platz. Enjoy your journey through Hannover!
